Shiverer (2007)
[Duos with Piano I]

The material in Shiverer  is designed not in terms of notes and rhythms, but rather of irreducible relationships between the instruments, each with an attendant sound-profile (unison and resonance, heterophony and friction, hocket and echo...). As most of the difficulties in the piece are not individual, but rather the result of complexities of coordination, the piece becomes a kind of etude in joint concentration, a series of technical, mental, and spiritual 'gates' which the players have to pass through together.

Shiverer is dedicated to Erin Lesser.
